How to Create a Paid WhatsApp Group in India

A practical guide to private group setup, Razorpay and UPI payments, verified access, renewal tracking, expired members, and the operational details that matter after launch.

A paid WhatsApp group is a private group or community where people pay for time limited access to education, coaching, accountability, research, discussion, or another clearly described service. WhatsApp itself does not give group administrators a complete membership billing system. You still need a way to collect money, confirm that it really arrived, decide who should get access, record when access expires, and handle renewals.

For Indian creators, the payment layer usually needs to support familiar methods such as UPI through a payment gateway. The operating layer needs to be simple enough to use every week. This guide explains a sound setup, including a manual approach and a MintLoop workflow. It does not promise that every WhatsApp action can be automated forever. WhatsApp platform rules, linked device availability, group permissions, and account restrictions can affect access operations.

What you need before creating a paid WhatsApp group

Start with the offer, not the software. A member should understand what they receive, how often it is delivered, how long access lasts, and what is not included. Write a one sentence promise such as, “Weekly career coaching prompts, two live Q&A sessions, and a private peer group for 30 days.” Avoid vague promises such as “premium secrets” or guaranteed financial results.

Your basic setup needs five parts:

  1. A WhatsApp group or community with clear rules and at least one reliable administrator.
  2. A legal and active Razorpay merchant account if you want to collect through Razorpay.
  3. A price, access period, refund policy, and description of the membership.
  4. A private way to reveal or deliver group access after verified payment.
  5. A membership record with the member name, payment reference, start date, expiry date, and access status.

You should also use a dedicated WhatsApp Business number where practical. Connecting a personal primary number to any linked device service creates avoidable privacy and continuity risks. Keep recovery information current and make sure another trusted administrator can protect the community if your main phone is unavailable.

Step 1: Prepare a private WhatsApp group

Create the group around one clear outcome. Add a useful name, a short description, posting rules, support contact details, and a note explaining how access works. If the community includes regulated topics such as securities, health, or legal advice, add the relevant qualifications and disclaimers. Software cannot make a noncompliant service compliant.

Next, open the group information screen and review the invite and approval settings available in your version of WhatsApp. Copy the invite link, but do not publish it on an open webpage or social post. A public invite link can be forwarded to people who have not paid. Where WhatsApp offers an approve new members option, enable it so an administrator can review join requests.

Store the invite link in a restricted place. If it spreads outside the member base, reset it from WhatsApp and update your access workflow. Treat the link like a door key, not like marketing copy.

Should you use a group or a community?

A single group works well when everyone receives the same access. A WhatsApp Community can be useful when you need an announcement space plus separate discussion groups. Keep the first version simple. Multiple subgroups create more renewal and access work, so only add them when the member experience requires them.

Step 2: Decide what to charge

Pricing should follow the value and delivery cost of the membership, not the number of WhatsApp messages. Consider your time, live sessions, research, templates, moderation, support, and the result a serious member can reasonably expect. Review comparable coaching or learning products, but do not copy a competitor's number without checking your own economics.

A useful starting model is:

  • Low touch discussion or accountability group: test a lower monthly price with clear boundaries.
  • Structured education with weekly material: charge for the curriculum and consistency.
  • High touch coaching or expert access: price the access to your time and limit member count.

Show the full amount before payment. State whether access lasts 30 days, one calendar month, a fixed cohort period, or a year. Also state whether renewal is manual or recurring. Do not describe a one time payment as a subscription.

MintLoop currently lists three creator plans. Starter is ₹0 per month with a 10% platform fee, Growth is ₹299 per month with a 1% platform fee, and Pro is ₹999 per month with a 0% platform fee. Razorpay processing charges and applicable taxes may also apply. These MintLoop plan fees are separate from the price you charge your member.

Step 3: Create a Razorpay and UPI checkout

A QR image sent in chat is easy to share, but it gives you a reconciliation problem. After someone pays, you still need to match the payment to the right person and group. A structured checkout creates an order with an amount and reference that your system can verify.

With MintLoop, the creator connects Razorpay, creates a group, selects the membership amount, and receives a public MintLoop checkout URL. The member opens that URL, enters the requested details, selects an available Razorpay payment method, and completes the payment. UPI availability depends on the creator's Razorpay account and its enabled methods.

The important difference is that access does not depend on an image supplied by the buyer. The application verifies the payment signature, checks the Razorpay order and captured payment details, confirms the amount and currency, and records a membership. Razorpay also recommends webhooks for asynchronous automation and API verification for critical user facing confirmation when needed. Read the Razorpay webhook documentation for the current provider guidance.

Why a screenshot is not payment proof

A screenshot can be edited, reused, or generated by a fake application. The buyer controls the image. Your payment provider controls the merchant side transaction record. Access should follow your verified record. Cashfree's guide to fake payment screenshot scams makes the same operational point: verify on the merchant side and do not release value based only on customer supplied proof.

Step 4: Reveal access only after verified payment

After payment verification, give the member a clear next step. One practical flow is to create a unique reference code, show a success page, and let the member send that code to the connected WhatsApp number. The system can check whether the code belongs to an active membership and then return the correct group invite link.

MintLoop uses a reference code and membership record for this handoff. The group administrator still needs to maintain safe WhatsApp settings. An invite link can be forwarded, so approval settings and periodic access review remain useful.

Do not put the raw invite link in payment receipts, public email previews, analytics event labels, or support screenshots. If you need to help a member, ask for the payment ID or MintLoop reference code, not a copy of private payment credentials.

What about automatic approval?

Linked device tools can assist with group access when the connected account has administrator permission and the required WhatsApp behavior is available. But this is not the same as an official guarantee from WhatsApp or Meta. MintLoop currently connects through a linked device using Baileys. WhatsApp changes, disconnections, restrictions, and group settings can interrupt automation. Keep an honest fallback process for manual approval.

Step 5: Track renewals and expired members

A paid group becomes difficult to manage when the first month ends. The creator needs to know which members renewed, which are about to expire, and which no longer have access. A spreadsheet can work for a small pilot, but it needs disciplined updates after every payment and refund.

For a manual system, create one row per membership with these fields: member name, verified contact, group, amount, payment ID, payment date, period start, period end, status, and access action. Never mark a member active from a screenshot alone.

MintLoop records successful payments, extends an existing active membership when the same member pays again, and keeps the current period end on the membership. Creators can then review member status in the dashboard. Access removal through a linked WhatsApp account depends on administrator permission, connection health, and WhatsApp restrictions, so it should be monitored rather than presented as an unconditional promise.

A respectful expiry process

Tell members what happens before they buy. Send a reminder before expiry, allow a sensible grace period if that matches your policy, and explain how to renew. If access is removed, keep the message neutral: the membership period ended and the renewal link is available. Avoid embarrassing a member in the group.

GST, invoices, Razorpay charges, and refunds

Tax treatment depends on your business, turnover, registration, location, and the service you sell. MintLoop cannot determine whether you must register for GST or what rate applies. Speak with a qualified Indian tax professional. Keep your legal business details consistent across Razorpay, invoices, your terms, and any GST records.

Razorpay charges are not the same as MintLoop platform fees. Review the current Razorpay pricing and tax invoices in your own merchant dashboard. Payment gateway pricing and available methods can change, so do not hard code an old gateway fee into your sales page.

Your refund policy should answer three questions: who decides the refund, how the member requests it, and what happens to group access after a refund. MintLoop does not hold creator member funds. A creator generally issues the member refund through their Razorpay account and must follow their published terms and applicable law.

Step 6: Test the complete member journey

Do not launch after checking only the payment button. Test the full path on a separate browser or device:

  1. Open the public checkout link while signed out.
  2. Confirm the group name, description, amount, access period, and refund wording.
  3. Complete a low value permitted test using the proper Razorpay environment.
  4. Confirm the payment appears in Razorpay and your membership system.
  5. Check the success page and reference code.
  6. Test the WhatsApp handoff and join request.
  7. Confirm the creator dashboard shows the member and correct expiry date.
  8. Test a failed or abandoned payment and confirm it does not grant access.

Use Razorpay test mode for integration testing and live mode only for an authorised real transaction. Keep separate webhook configuration for each mode. Never paste production secrets into support chats, source code, or screenshots.

Paid WhatsApp group launch checklist

  • The offer, schedule, price, and access period are written in plain language.
  • The WhatsApp group has rules, administrator coverage, and a private invite link.
  • Razorpay is connected and the merchant account is ready for the intended payment methods.
  • The checkout amount and membership duration are correct.
  • Payment verification uses provider data, not a screenshot.
  • The success and access instructions are tested on mobile.
  • Renewal, expiry, refund, and support processes are documented.
  • The privacy notice explains what data is stored and what is not.
  • The site states that the service is independent from WhatsApp and Meta.
  • Regulated communities have appropriate professional and legal review.

Manual setup versus paid WhatsApp group software

A manual setup is reasonable when you are validating a small group and can check every payment yourself. Use a private invite link, a Razorpay payment link or order flow, approval settings, and a carefully maintained sheet. The weakness is not the sheet itself. The weakness is the gap between payment, membership dates, and WhatsApp access.

Software becomes useful when you are repeating the same checks, losing renewal dates, or asking members to send screenshots. MintLoop is one India focused method because it connects Razorpay verification, membership records, checkout links, and WhatsApp access workflows. Compare it with a manual approach in the manual WhatsApp payments comparison, or see the coaching workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can you charge people to join a WhatsApp group?

Yes, you can sell a separate membership service that includes access to a private WhatsApp group, subject to applicable laws and platform rules. WhatsApp itself does not provide the complete billing and membership system described in this guide.

Do I need a website?

You need a clear public place to explain the offer and a secure checkout path. MintLoop provides a shareable checkout page, so a separate custom website is not required for the basic workflow.

Can MintLoop guarantee automatic member removal?

No. MintLoop can support access operations through a linked WhatsApp device, but connected account health, administrator permissions, WhatsApp behavior, and restrictions affect what is possible. Keep a manual fallback.

Is UPI included?

MintLoop uses the creator's connected Razorpay account. Payment methods, including UPI, depend on what Razorpay enables for that merchant and transaction.

What should I do first?

Write the offer and policy, prepare the private group, connect Razorpay, create a low risk pilot, and test the entire member path before promoting it widely.
